Week ending 14/09/09 - Squirrels update

by Lauren Delander 18. September 2009 10:41

This week in Squirrels we have been looking at Problem, Solving Reasoning and Numeracy. We have looked at big and small, where we searched the room for different for toys that looked the same and grouped them by putting similar objects together on one table. The practitioner would challenge the children by asking them questions such as can you find the big spoon, this would give the children the opportunity to explore the objects and develop a concept of big and small through comparing and grouping the objests. The activity was really intresting and the children showed a wide range of skills when grouping objects, some of the children needed support with seperating the big from the small but most has a good idea by the end of the activity.

Our second activity was group signing, this allowed the children to sing songs relating to numbers such as five current buns and three cheeky monkeys, also as we were sat as a group the children had a chance to develop social skills through intteracting with the practitioners and their peers. The children showed good listening skills and joined in with the songs they were familiar with through copying the actions, and repeating familiar words.

This week we also tried an activity out of nursery world, which was matching socks, to do this we filled the messy tray with socks and encouraged the children to explore them and match them up. Most of the children picked up odd socks, but one child picked up twos socks the same, this shows that the childrena are generating the idea of matching, so to continue supporting them we will continue to play a range of matching games with them.

Overall the activites have helped develop counting and matching skills with the children, ensuring that they are interacting with thier peers and practitioners to develop their learning.

Hoep you all have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday
