Week ending 14/09/09 - Turtles update

by Nicole Odell 18. September 2009 11:30

This week we have been covering Personal, social and emotional development so all our activities have been based around this. The first activity was decorating the black sheet in white paint for our cot room, tiny turtles had great fun doing this. We laid the sheet on the foor, and once the turtles had their all in one suits on we let them decorate it with white paint. They showed a keen intrest in the activity and enjoyed using thier hands to paint on the sheet, the children used a range of tools to make thier own marks on the sheet and the practitioners supported them in putting their hand and foot prints on the sheet. This activity helped the children to develop their PSED as it was a group activity encouraging social interation, whilst giving them a sense of achievement when the finished product was done or for the younger ones making thier own marks on the sheet.

We have also been encouraging turtles to have a go at feeding themselves, which went really well with most of the older babies feeding themselves although sometimes needing support to put the food on the spoon. This activity was abit messy bu the children enjoyed being independent and meeting their own needs. This is something we will continue to encourage the children to do on a daily basis as it is good for them to gain a sense of achievement and will support them in their transition to the next room when they move. The smaller babies needed a ot of support although we did find giving them extra spoons to hold whilst we fed them worked well as they could try to feed themselves as well as the practitioner feeding them, so they were included in the activity, his also helped them in developing their fine motor skills through holding the spoon and raising it to thier mouth.

Our reflection activity also went well, as we used the big mirror to encouraged children to stand or sit in front of it. Alot of the children smiled and laughed at thier reflection and were excited to see themselves, this was an enjoyable activity with lots of laughing from the children and team. Some of the older children noticed when a practitioner was stood behind them they could see them in the mirror and that if they turned around they were there, so many of the children kept turning from the mirror to look behind them. This activity has helped children recognise thier idividualities and to become more aware of themselves and the others around them.

Have a lovely weekend. See you next week
