Garden Ideas

Spending the day in the garden? Here’s a couple of ideas to keep you busy!

Clean the Car!

Now obviously not your actual car as I don’t think the end result would be desirable!! If your little one has a play car, this activity will keep them busy for ages.

This can be done on many things outside just depends what your happy for your child to ‘clean’. This is one of my little boy’s favourite things to do in the garden and yet so simple.

What you’ll need:

  • Spray bottle filled with water (even better if you have a couple in different colours)
  • A cloth that’s safe for your child to use
  • Something to clean

Steps

Now this is pretty self-explanatory, just show your child/children what they can clean, maybe show them how to spray their car and wipe with the cloth.

Children love mimicking what they see the grownups do and this is no different when it comes to cleaning. Also, a spray bottle is one of the best toys possible to a toddler.

To be honest they don’t really need the other bits, they will have fun with just the spray bottles. Spray bottles are also great for watering the plants as well as for a mini water fight in the warm weather!

Homemade Bird Feeders

A great way to get your children involved in nature and teach them how to look after the world around them.

What you will need:

  • Lard
  • String approx 30 cms long
  • Clean yoghurt pot.
  • You can choose from a mixture of wild bird seed, oats, breadcrumbs, sultanas, currants, unsalted nuts. Don’t use all of these just pick a few.

Steps

  1. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.
  2. An adult should melt the lard in a saucepan
  3. The adult should add the melted lard to the dry ingredients
  4. Mix ingredients together (with adult supervision).
  5. Put a small hole in the end of the yoghurt pot and thread the piece of sting through. You want the piece that goes through your yoghurt pot to be long, as this is the side you will hang it from, but be sure to leave enough sting under the pot to tie a big knot.
  6. Fill the pot with your mixture, pack it in tightly and leave in the fridge overnight to set.
  7. Have an adult cut away the yoghurt pot and tie a knot in the short end of the string.
  8. Now find the perfect spot in your garden for your feeder, somewhere out of the way of cats and ideally where you can observe from the house
